Bible Study Topics That Will Draw You Closer to Jesus
Have you ever opened your Bible, read a few chapters, and then closed it thinking, “Well… I’m not really sure what I got out of that”?
If so, you’re not alone.
There’s a huge difference between reading the Bible aimlessly and studying the Bible with a purpose. When we choose a specific Bible study topic, it’s like setting the GPS for a destination.
We know where we’re headed, and every verse we read is a step toward that goal. Generally speaking, we must know ALL of the Word of God and this is where bible study plans are a great help. In fact, I would suggest that you go through the entire bible with a suitable bible study plan everyday, but also compliment it with a meditation time for a specific bible study topic.
As you draw an object closer to a source of light, you can see its flaws, dust, dirt, scratches and any imperfections clearer. Similarly, as I drew closer to Jesus, I began to realize I was prideful, arrogant, short tempered and struggled with some besetting sinful habits. I had a regular bible reading plan and a time of prayer. I was a committed follower of Christ and served Him at every opportunity. But it took me specific bible study topics to deal with the issues in my life. Choosing specific bible study topics for regular study time and meditating on the passages helped me overcome much of the challenges I faced.
Topical Bible study helps us:
- Grow stronger in areas where we are weak (for example, fear, doubt, or anger).
- Overcome besetting sins or addictions by filling our minds with God’s truth in that specific area.
- Deepen our understanding of God’s character in a focused way.
- Build a habit of applying the Word to our daily life—not just reading for information but for transformation.
Today, I want to share five powerful and unique Bible study topics—each with a 7-day reading plan—to help you draw nearer to Jesus and love your Bible more than ever. These aren’t just “popular” topics; they’re chosen to challenge you, encourage you, and transform you from the inside out.
Topic 1: Overcoming Fear with Faith
Fear can paralyze us. But faith, rooted in God’s promises, can set us free. Fear just sounds like a normal human emotion, but it is evil and is the enemy of faith. Fear causes doubt, and doubt brings about unbelief and unbelief causes us to rely on our own strength and understanding. Before you realize, you drifted away from your trust in God. If you are a fearful person, engage in this specific bible study topic for the next seven days. But there is a healthy fear. We are called to have a fear of the Lord, a deep reverence for God. In fact, the fear of the Lord will help you overcome the spirit of fear of the world. Here is a devotion on the fear of the Lord to help you understand this better.
7-Day Bible Reading Plan
Day 1 – Isaiah 41:10 – God promises His presence and help in times of fear.
Day 2 – Psalm 27 – David’s confidence in God despite danger.
Day 3 – Matthew 14:22-33 – Peter walks on water—until fear takes over.
Day 4 – 2 Timothy 1:7 – God has given us power, love, and a sound mind.
Day 5 – Psalm 46 – God is our refuge and strength in trouble.
Day 6 – John 14:27 – Jesus gives peace, not as the world gives.
Day 7 – Romans 8:31-39 – Nothing can separate us from God’s love.
This plan reminds you daily that fear loses its grip when you remember God’s presence, promises, and power. Faith is not ignoring fear—it’s choosing to trust God more than your circumstances.
Topic 2: Living a Life of Gratitude
Gratitude changes everything. It shifts our focus from what’s missing to what’s already given. Just giving thanks to God and being grateful is a powerful weapon against depression and discouragement. Whenever, I feel low, I pick up my guitar or sit at the keyboard and begin singing songs of praise to my Lord Jesus. Within moments, the discouragement lifts off and sets my focus on Jesus. I remember how much He has forgiven me and how far He has brought me. My heart wells up with gratitude and the momentary problems just seem so small because I begin to trust that He who brought me this far will continue to carry me through my current problem too.
7-Day Bible Reading Plan
Day 1 – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 – Give thanks in all circumstances.
Day 2 – Psalm 103:1-14 – Remembering all God’s benefits.
Day 3 – Luke 17:11-19 – The one leper who returned to thank Jesus.
Day 4 – Colossians 3:15-17 – Gratitude as part of Christian living.
Day 5 – Philippians 4:6-7 – Thankfulness in prayer leads to peace.
Day 6 – Psalm 136 – God’s steadfast love endures forever.
Day 7 – Ephesians 5:19-20 – Giving thanks always and for everything.
Gratitude keeps our hearts soft toward God, even in hard seasons. This plan will help you form a daily habit of thankfulness, making you more aware of God’s constant goodness.
Topic 3: Walking in Holiness in a World of Temptation
Holiness isn’t about being “perfect”—it’s about being set apart for God. As I drew closer to Jesus, I began to see the filth inside of me. The lustful thoughts, the pride, the ego, and much more. God’s Word commands, “Be holy because your Father in heaven is holy”. I wanted to live a life pleasing to my Lord. I made it my goal to fight my fleshly instincts. Paul said, he beat his body to make it do what it should do. Romans 6 exhorts us to put to death the lusts of our flesh by the Spirit. But trying to use my will power was foolishness. I tried, believe me. I tried numerous times and failed all the time. But meditating on God’s finished work and His word, helped me a lot. Choose this specific bible study topic for the next 7 days if you are struggling with sin. Ask God to help you overcome and choose to lean in on the power of His Word and not on your will power. His Word will set you free. Here is a devotion on how to resist temptation to help you overcome your struggles.
7-Day Bible Reading Plan
Day 1 – 1 Peter 1:13-16 – Be holy as God is holy.
Day 2 – 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 – Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.
Day 3 – Psalm 119:9-16 – Keeping pure by living according to God’s Word.
Day 4 – James 1:12-15 – Temptation’s progression and God’s reward for endurance.
Day 5 – Galatians 5:16-25 – Walking by the Spirit vs. the works of the flesh.
Day 6 – Titus 2:11-14 – Grace teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness.
Day 7 – Hebrews 12:1-2 – Run the race by fixing your eyes on Jesus.
This plan will equip you to stand firm when temptation calls. By leaning on God’s Spirit, you can overcome sin and live a life that pleases Him.
Topic 4: Developing a Servant’s Heart
Jesus didn’t come to be served, but to serve. We’re called to do the same. As leaders, we should not be authoritative over those we lead. We must be an image of Christ for them. We must display humility as Jesus did in washing His disciples feet. We must carry the image of Christ and be a role model to those we lead. If you are a bossy kind of person justifying that you need to be bossy to get things done, then perhaps that is the most un-Christlike one can be. Develop a servant’s heart. When those you lead look up to you, they must see Christ in you. Dedicate your next 7 days to developing a servant’s heart with this bible study plan.
7-Day Bible Reading Plan
Day 1 – Mark 10:42-45 – Greatness is found in serving.
Day 2 – John 13:1-17 – Jesus washes His disciples’ feet.
Day 3 – Philippians 2:1-11 – The humility and obedience of Christ.
Day 4 – Galatians 5:13-14 – Serve one another in love.
Day 5 – Matthew 25:31-46 – Serving Jesus by serving “the least of these.”
Day 6 – Romans 12:9-13 – Sincere love in action.
Day 7 – 1 Peter 4:10-11 – Using our gifts to serve others.
This plan shifts our focus from self-centered living to Christlike service. It will challenge you to look for opportunities to serve in love every day.
Topic 5: Trusting God’s Timing
Waiting is one of the hardest parts of the Christian walk—but it’s where faith grows. Many a time, I have been impatient. I’ve prayed, waited for a while and when I did not see results, I resorted to my own plans only to realize that I had just missed God’s timing. If only I had waited patiently, God would’ve had something so much better for me. With time I learnt to be patient. With patience comes stronger faith and trust in God. When we wait for God’s timing, we get to a point when we firmly believe that our prayers are not just words spoken into the air. He definitely hears us and He doesn’t just ignore our prayers. In His timing, He will grant us what is best for us. Here is a devotion on unanswered prayers to help you grow in this area of trusting in God’s timing.
7-Day Bible Reading Plan
Day 1 – Ecclesiastes 3:1-14 – God’s timing for everything.
Day 2 – Habakkuk 2:1-4 – Waiting with faith.
Day 3 – Psalm 27:13-14 – Waiting on the Lord strengthens our hearts.
Day 4 – Genesis 21:1-7 – God fulfills His promise to Sarah in His time.
Day 5 – Isaiah 40:28-31 – Renewed strength comes from waiting on the Lord.
Day 6 – John 11:1-44 – Jesus delays for a greater purpose.
Day 7 – Galatians 6:9 – Don’t grow weary; the harvest will come.
This plan will help you see that God’s delays are never without purpose. His timing is always perfect, even when it feels slow to us.
