how to meditate

When people hear the word meditation, many think of Eastern practices or emptying the mind. I did too. The image that immediately comes to mind is sitting cross legged with your eyes shut and keeping your posture straight with your palms on your knees or perhaps standing still on one leg with your hands stretched high up above your shoulders. I always thought that the goal was to empty your mind from all thoughts and have nothing in it. The belief was that doing this somehow gives you ultimate peace. At least that was what I was given to understand during my time as a Hindu.

But biblical meditation is very different. It’s not about emptying your mind, but filling it with God’s Word and letting Scripture take root deep in your heart.

Joshua 1:8 says:

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

Meditation on God’s Word is the process of slowing down, reflecting, repeating, and applying Scripture until it becomes part of your daily thinking, your decisions, and your lifestyle.

Why Meditate on God’s Word?

  1. It strengthens your faith – Romans 10:17 says, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” The more you meditate on Scripture, the more your faith grows.
  2. It transforms your mind – Meditation renews the way you think (Romans 12:2). Instead of being shaped by the world, your thoughts begin to reflect God’s truth.
  3. It guides you into holiness – When God’s Word saturates your heart, it becomes easier to resist temptation and walk in obedience (Psalm 119:11).
  4. It brings peace and joy – Isaiah 26:3 promises: “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”

Farmers know that cows chew their food more than once. After eating, they bring it back up and chew it again and again until it is fully digested. This process helps them absorb every nutrient.

Meditating on God’s Word is just like that. You don’t just read a verse once and move on—you return to it throughout the day, turning it over in your mind, chewing on it, and drawing out every spiritual “nutrient” it contains. That’s when Scripture begins to shape your heart and actions. So it is not about emptying your mind, but filling it with a particular verse or verses from God’s Word and rethinking about it over and over again, until it consumes your heart and becomes part of who you are.

How Meditation Helps You Grow

1. Faith and Knowledge of God

When you meditate on verses about God’s promises, your confidence in Him grows. For example, repeating and reflecting on “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5) reminds you of His constant presence, especially in lonely seasons.

2. Holiness and Obedience

Meditation helps move truth from your head into your heart. Reading “Be holy, because I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16) once may inspire you, but meditating on it daily gives strength to actually walk in purity and obedience.

3. Practical Transformation

Meditation helps you live Scripture in real moments. For instance, when anger rises, if you’ve been meditating on “Be slow to anger” (James 1:19), the Spirit brings it to mind and empowers you to respond differently.

When meditating on God’s Word becomes a daily discipline in your life, it is amazing how easily the Holy Spirit brings to remembrance His word just at the right time when you are in the midst of a challenge. And I assure you, you will be able to speak to God and hear Him respond to you through the very scriptures you have meditated on. It breathes life into every dead and desolate situation.

How to Meditate on God’s Word

Here are some simple techniques for meditation on Scripture:

  1. Read Slowly – Choose a short passage or even a single verse. Don’t rush.
  2. Repeat Out Loud – Say it again and again. Let your ears hear it.
  3. Personalize It – Replace “you” with “me” or your name. For example: “The Lord is my shepherd; He leads me.”
  4. Picture It – Visualize the scene or truth. Imagine Jesus calming the storm, or God’s hand guiding you.
  5. Pray It – Turn the verse into a prayer. “Lord, help me to set my mind on things above.”
  6. Apply It – Ask: How does this verse change my choices today?

Top Tips for Successful Meditation

  • Be consistent – Even 5–10 minutes daily can transform your life.
  • Start simple – One verse is enough. Don’t overwhelm yourself.
  • Write it down – Keep a journal of the verses you meditate on and what God speaks to you.
  • Remove distractions – Find a quiet space where you can focus.
  • Use reminders – Put the verse on your phone wallpaper, sticky notes, or mirrors.
  • Mix with prayer – Don’t just think about the verse—talk to God about it.

Start Today

Meditation on God’s Word is not for “super-spiritual” people—it’s for every believer. You don’t need a theology degree. You just need a hungry heart and a willingness to let Scripture sink in deeply.

Don’t wait for the perfect time or place. Start today. Pick one verse, carry it with you, chew on it like the cow chews cud, and let it nourish your soul throughout the day.

As you meditate daily, you will discover peace, joy, holiness, and strength rising in your life. You will find yourself living not just with God’s Word but in God’s Word.

“Blessed is the one… whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.” (Psalm 1:1–2)
