Trust In God
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
Proverbs 3:5–6
Most of us trust God — until things stop making sense.
Think about using GPS while driving. As long as the route looks logical, we’re fine. But the moment the GPS tells us to turn into a narrow side street or take a longer-looking detour, we hesitate. “This doesn’t look right.” Sometimes we even ignore it and stick to what feels familiar — only to get stuck in traffic or go the wrong way.
Our walk with God often looks the same. Trust like this grows when we spend time understanding God’s Word, not just reacting to circumstances.
We say we trust Him, but when circumstances don’t line up with our understanding, we start leaning on our own reasoning. We analyze, overthink, and try to control outcomes. Yet Proverbs reminds us that true trust is not partial trust. It is trusting God even when we don’t understand the route He is taking us on.
Leaning on our own understanding feels safe because it’s familiar. But our understanding is limited — shaped by past experiences, fears, and assumptions. God sees the whole picture. He sees the roadblocks ahead, the delays we don’t anticipate, and the destination we cannot yet see.
A dear friend and brother of mine recently went through unfathomable challenges at his work place. He is a very hardworking individual, honest, reliable, and faithful in all of his duties, yet it seemed like some people in the organization wanted him out to fulfill their own agenda. He did not understand why he was being sidelined or ignored. He did not understand why he was going through this hardship. He could not see ahead and spent many days anxious and without sleep.
I, in his place would’ve long given up and quit. Yet, he on the other hand, displayed a steady obedience to this verse of the day. He consciously decided to trust in the Lord. He consciously decided not to lean on his own understanding. He simply humbled himself and submitted to God’s will. In due course of time, God ensured he was promoted to a higher role with higher responsibilities. God did make his paths straight. Praise the Lord!
Submitting our ways to Him doesn’t mean switching off our minds. It means choosing humility over control. It means saying, “Lord, I don’t fully understand this situation, but I trust that You do.” That posture of trust allows God to guide us step by step.
God doesn’t promise a problem-free journey. He promises direction. And when we trust Him with our whole heart, He straightens our path — not always by removing difficulty, but by leading us through it with clarity and purpose.
Life Application
Ask yourself today:
- Where am I leaning on my own understanding instead of trusting God?
- Is there an area where I want clarity before obedience?
- What would it look like to submit this situation fully to the Lord?
Trust grows when we release control, one decision at a time.
