India does not allow for dual citizenship. Therefore, I had to make a choice to surrender my Indian citizenship in favor of my new citizenship in New Zealand. I now live abiding by the laws of New Zealand, and I am not subject to the laws of India. I can no longer live or travel freely anywhere in India without a valid visa. Additionally, there are certain ways of doing things in New Zealand which are unique to New Zealand and quite foreign to me. But I have adopted the new values with time.

That passport exchange is a faint picture of a far greater change: moving from earth-bound citizenship to becoming a citizen of heaven in Christ. We could also view this analogy from a different perspective.

I may have adapted to the environment in New Zealand, but I can never forget where I truly belong. My identity is tied to my home country, India. In the same way, although believers live in this world, their identity is in heaven.

2. We Focus on What Lasts

Jesus said:

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth…” (Matthew 6:19)

A citizen of heaven invests in what is eternal—not just what is temporary.

This affects how we:

• handle money and priorities
• use our time
• make decisions

As citizens of heaven, our lives should reflect God’s nature.

This includes:

• love
• humility
• integrity
• forgiveness
