Citizen of heaven

What The Bible Teaches

Philippians 1:27 — “Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ.”

Many people spend their lives focused only on what they can see—work, family, goals, and daily responsibilities.

But the Bible introduces a powerful truth: believers are not just citizens of this world. They are citizens of heaven.

“Our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 3:20)

So what does it actually mean to live as a citizen of heaven? And how does this change the way we live our daily lives?

What Does It Mean to Be a Citizen of Heaven?

A citizen belongs to a country, follows its values, and lives under its authority.

In the same way, a citizen of heaven:

  • belongs to God’s kingdom
  • lives by God’s truth
  • looks forward to eternal life

This does not mean we withdraw from the world. It means we live in the world with a different perspective.

Why This Matters in Everyday Life

If we forget that our true citizenship is in heaven, we begin to:

  • chase the temporary things of this world
  • measure success only by worldly standards
  • become discouraged by earthly struggles

But when we remember who we belong to, our priorities begin to change.

We start living with eternity in mind.

If you want to understand more about eternity, you can read What Happens After Death According to the Bible, which explains what lies beyond this life.

Living with an Eternal Perspective

Living as a citizen of heaven means seeing life differently.

1. From Earthly Passports to a Heavenly Identity

I am originally from India and held an Indian passport as proof of my identity. As a citizen of India, I lived my life abiding by the laws of India. I could travel freely anywhere within India and live in absolute freedom in any city in India. Additionally, there are certain behaviors that are specific to the Indian culture and there are certain ways of doing things in India which may be unique just to India.

But then, I migrated to New Zealand, and I willfully applied for a new citizenship in this new country. I was granted one and I obtained a New Zealand passport and am now a citizen of New Zealand. India does not allow for dual citizenship. Therefore, I had to make a choice to surrender my Indian citizenship in favor of my new citizenship in New Zealand. I now live abiding by the laws of New Zealand, and I am not subject to the laws of India. I can no longer live or travel freely anywhere in India without a valid visa. Additionally, there are certain ways of doing things in New Zealand which are unique to New Zealand and quite foreign to me. But I have adopted the new values with time.

That passport exchange is a faint picture of a far greater change: moving from earth-bound citizenship to becoming a citizen of heaven in Christ. We could also view this analogy from a different perspective.

I may have adapted to the environment in New Zealand, but I can never forget where I truly belong. My identity is tied to my home country, India. In the same way, although believers live in this world, their identity is in heaven.

2. We Focus on What Lasts

Jesus said:

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth…” (Matthew 6:19)

A citizen of heaven invests in what is eternal—not just what is temporary.

This affects how we:

  • handle money and priorities
  • use our time
  • make decisions
3. We Reflect God’s Character

As citizens of heaven, our lives should reflect God’s nature.

This includes:

  • love
  • humility
  • integrity
  • forgiveness

The Bible describes this transformation of a person through the work of the Holy Spirit.

If you want to understand this more, you can read Who Is the Holy Spirit and What Does He Do?, which explains how God changes us from within.

3. We Live Differently from the World

Living as a citizen of heaven often means going against the flow.

The world may prioritize:

  • success
  • status
  • comfort

But a citizen of heaven values:

  • obedience
  • faithfulness
  • righteousness

This is not always easy, but it is meaningful and very fulfilling.

The Role of Faith and Salvation

Becoming a citizen of heaven is not automatic.

The Bible teaches that it comes through faith in Jesus Christ.

“For through him we both have access to the Father…” (Ephesians 2:18)

Jesus made a way for us to belong to God’s kingdom.

Living with Purpose and Endurance

We:

  • endure challenges with hope
  • remain steady in difficult times
  • keep moving forward in faith

This connects closely with the idea of perseverance. You may find encouragement in Finish the Race, which explains how to remain faithful until the end.
