How to Overcome Anxiety as a Christian

Finding God’s Peace When Your Mind Won’t Stop Worrying

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” — Philippians 4:6 (NIV)

You believe in God. You pray. You read the Bible. You know that God is in control. And yet sometimes your mind simply will not stop worrying.

What if something goes wrong?

What if I lose my job?

What if the medical report is bad?

What if something happens to my family?

What if I make the wrong decision?

One anxious thought leads to another, and before long, your mind is carrying problems that have not even happened.

So, how do you overcome anxiety as a Christian?

The answer is not simply, “Stop worrying.” God gives us something much more practical. He teaches us what to do with our worries.

What Does the Bible Say About Anxiety?

One of the clearest Bible verses about anxiety is Philippians 4:6–7:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

And then comes the promise:

“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Notice the exchange.

Anxiety goes to God. Peace comes from God.

Paul does not simply tell us to stop thinking about our problems. He tells us where to take them. Bring them to God.

1. Stop Carrying Tomorrow Today

Jesus said:

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.” — Matthew 6:34 (NIV)

Much of our anxiety comes from living mentally in a future that has not arrived. Your body is sitting at home today, but your mind is already living next week.

You are having imaginary conversations. Solving imaginary problems. Preparing for imaginary disasters.

And experiencing real anxiety over events that may never happen.

Jesus brings us back to today.

God has given you grace for today. When tomorrow comes, He will still be God.

You do not need tomorrow’s answers today.

2. Give God What You Cannot Control

One of the greatest causes of anxiety is our desire for control. We want to know what will happen. We want people to behave the way we expect.

We want our plans to work. We want certainty. But life does not give us that kind of control.

That is why Proverbs 3:5 tells us:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”

There will always be things you cannot understand or control. Peace begins when you can say:

“Lord, I cannot control this, but I trust You with it.”

That is not irresponsibility. It is surrender.

Do what God has given you responsibility to do, and give Him what you cannot do.

3. Learn How to Stop Overthinking with Scripture

Anxiety often begins with a thought. Then we feed that thought. We replay it. Analyze it.

Imagine different outcomes. Soon, one thought becomes twenty.

This is why dealing with Christian anxiety and overthinking requires learning to redirect the mind.

Isaiah 26:3 says:

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”

A steadfast mind is not necessarily a mind that never experiences anxious thoughts.

It is a mind that knows where to return. When your thoughts wander into fear, bring them back to God.

When your mind imagines the worst, bring it back to God’s promises. You don’t have to believe every thought that enters your mind.

Fill your mind with Scripture until God’s truth becomes louder than your fear.

4. Turn Worry into Prayer

First Peter 5:7 says:

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

I love the word cast.

It means we don’t have to keep carrying the burden. Imagine walking through an airport carrying a heavy suitcase when there is a luggage trolley beside you.

Your arms hurt. Your shoulders hurt. You are exhausted. Yet you keep carrying the suitcase.

Why? Put it down. Spiritually, many of us do the same thing.

We pray about something and then pick it straight back up.

When anxiety returns, pray again. “Lord, I gave this to You this morning. I give it to You again.”

Prayer is not pretending the problem doesn’t exist. Prayer is deciding who will carry it.

5. Remember That Peace Does Not Require Perfect Circumstances

Jesus said:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.” — John 14:27 (NIV)

The world usually defines peace as the absence of problems. Everything is going well.

The bills are paid. Everyone is healthy. The future looks secure. Then we have peace.

Jesus offers something better.

Peace in the middle of uncertainty.

Christian peace does not come from knowing what will happen tomorrow.

It comes from knowing Who will be there when tomorrow arrives.

6. Build a Daily Habit of Trusting God

Overcoming anxiety is rarely about one dramatic spiritual moment. It is usually a daily journey.

Today you surrender your fear. Tomorrow, another worry appears. So you surrender again.

You pray again. You return to Scripture again. You trust again.

And slowly, something begins to change within you. The circumstances may not have changed.

But you are changing. Your first response becomes prayer, not panic.

Your mind begins returning to Scripture instead of automatically following fear. Your confidence becomes rooted less in circumstances and more in God’s character.

That is spiritual growth.

7. Don’t Struggle Alone

Sometimes anxiety becomes persistent or overwhelming. Seeking help does not mean you have abandoned faith.

Talk with trusted Christian friends. Speak with your pastor or spiritual leader. When appropriate, seek help from a qualified health or mental health professional.

God can work through prayer, Scripture, Christian community, wise counsel, and professional care.

You do not have to carry difficult seasons alone.

A Simple Prayer When You Feel Anxious

Father, You know what is troubling my heart today. You know the thoughts I cannot seem to silence, and the things I am afraid might happen. I give these worries to You. Help me to stop carrying tomorrow today. Teach me to trust You with what I cannot control. Guard my heart and mind with Your peace, and help me keep my thoughts fixed on Your truth. I choose to trust You today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Take the Next Step: Peace Over Anxiety

Knowing what the Bible says about anxiety is important. But sometimes we need more than one encouraging article. We need to build new habits.

That is why I wrote Peace Over Anxiety: A 30-Day Christian Devotional to Overcome Fear, Worry, and Stress Through God’s Word.

This devotional was created to help you spend 30 days intentionally learning to bring anxiety before God and replace patterns of fear and overthinking with Scripture, prayer, surrender, gratitude, and trust.

Each day includes:

  • A Bible passage
  • A practical devotion
  • A relatable real-life example
  • Three reflection questions
  • Five practical steps
  • A personal prayer
  • Space for your own reflections

The goal is not to promise that every problem will disappear in 30 days. It is to help you develop a different response when anxiety comes.

Instead of panic — prayer. Instead of carrying everything — surrender.

Instead of constantly imagining tomorrow — trusting God today.

Instead of allowing fear to control your thoughts — returning your mind to God’s Word.

You may not be able to control tomorrow.

But you can learn to trust the One who already holds it.

Peace Over Anxiety is available in Kindle and paperback editions. The paperback edition also gives you space to write your personal reflections as you work through the 30-day journey.

You may also want to read The Holy Bible to understand why God’s Word can become such a powerful foundation for faith, hope, and peace.

Above all, keep returning to Scripture. You don’t have to solve your entire future today.

Walk with God today. And when tomorrow arrives, He will already be there.
