Quiet! Be Still!
“He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.” — Mark 4:39 (NIV)
Life has a way of changing suddenly.
One moment everything feels normal, and the next moment we are caught in a storm we never expected. A health issue. Financial pressure. Anxiety. Family conflict. Fear about the future. Sometimes the storm is external, and sometimes the storm is entirely within our hearts.
In Mark chapter 4, the disciples found themselves in the middle of a violent storm while Jesus was asleep in the boat. These were experienced fishermen. They had seen storms before. But this storm terrified them so much that they thought they were going to die.
Meanwhile, Jesus was sleeping peacefully.
The disciples woke Him up in panic and asked:
“Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
Jesus stood up and simply spoke:
“Quiet! Be still!”
Immediately, the storm obeyed Him.
The wind stopped.
The waves settled.
Everything became calm.
What is powerful about this passage is that Jesus did not struggle with the storm. He did not panic. He did not negotiate with the wind. He simply spoke with authority.
The same Jesus who calmed the storm then is still able to calm the storms in our lives today.
Sometimes God Calms the Storm Around Us
There are times when God changes the situation itself.
He opens the door.
He heals.
He provides.
He restores relationships.
He removes obstacles we could never move ourselves.
Many believers have testimonies of how God intervened suddenly and powerfully in impossible situations.
One phone call changed everything.
One prayer changed everything.
One breakthrough changed everything.
Jesus still has authority over every storm.
Sometimes God Calms the Storm Within Us
But there are also times when the external storm continues for a season while God calms our hearts internally.
This is often the greater miracle.
The situation may not change immediately, but suddenly:
- fear leaves,
- peace enters,
- anxiety loses its grip,
- and faith begins to rise.
You may still be in the middle of the storm, but the storm is no longer inside you.
That kind of peace can only come from God.
As we discussed in our article on anxiety and trusting God, peace is not the absence of trouble. True peace is the presence of Christ in the middle of trouble.

Jesus Was in the Boat the Whole Time
One important detail many people overlook is this:
The disciples were never abandoned.
Yes, there was a storm.
Yes, the boat was shaking.
Yes, the waves were crashing.
But Jesus was still in the boat.
Sometimes when life becomes difficult, we assume God has left us. We think His silence means His absence. But silence does not mean abandonment.
Jesus knew about the storm before it started.
And He knows every storm you are facing right now.
Nothing catches God by surprise.
Faith Is Often Revealed in Storms
Storms have a way of exposing what is really inside us.
When life is comfortable, it is easy to say we trust God. But storms reveal whether our confidence is truly in Christ or in our circumstances.
A tree’s roots are not tested on sunny days. They are tested during strong winds.
In the same way, trials often deepen our faith and dependence on God.

This is why some of the strongest believers are people who have walked through the deepest valleys.
If you are currently in a difficult season, do not assume God has forgotten you. Sometimes the storm is developing a deeper trust in Him.
As we explored in our article on spiritual warfare, the enemy often tries to use fear and discouragement to weaken believers during difficult seasons.

The Voice That Controls the Storm
What amazes me most about this passage is that creation itself obeyed Jesus.
The wind obeyed Him.
The waves obeyed Him.
This reveals something powerful:
Jesus is not merely a teacher or prophet. He is Lord over creation itself.
The same voice that spoke the universe into existence is the same voice that spoke peace over the storm.
And today, He still speaks peace over troubled hearts.
Sometimes we spend so much time listening to fear, social media, negative news, and anxious thoughts that we stop listening to the voice of God.
But one word from Jesus can bring peace that the world cannot give.
Be Still and Trust Him
Perhaps today you feel overwhelmed.
Maybe your mind feels restless.
Maybe your future feels uncertain.
Remember this:
the storm is not greater than the Savior in your boat.
Jesus is still able to speak:
“Quiet! Be still!”
And when He speaks, fear must bow.
The storm will not last forever.
Hold on to Him.
Trust Him.
Pray through the storm.
And remember that even when the waves are loud, His voice is louder.
